Small Dogs versus Big Dogs
Now before you make your conclusion on this versus theory concerning small dogs and big dogs, don’t assume anything just yet. I will give you unbiased comparison as much I can be, even on things I don’t have the pleasure of either hearing or saying them.
And please don’t go thinking because I’m one fanatic dog-lover, those adorable misty eyes, watery button nose, ever wagging tail, cushy comforting paws and sultry healing tongue can make me go ga-ga and say anything goes. I will be lying if I say no. On a hindsight, having a dog in our life is big decision so before you fall in love with them, it’s best to examine your lifestyles, commitment levels and financial capability.
Small Dogs
- Smaller breeds of dogs generally live longer and age more slowly. Small and medium-sized dogs can live up to 17 years or longer, depending on individual health and living conditions.
- Certain breeds of small dogs like Pug, Pekingese, Maltese, Shih Tzu, Boston Terrier tend to be prone to eyeball prolapse (eyeballs popping out of their sockets).
- Small dogs are idea pets for those living in apartments or small houses.
- Smaller dogs are easy to lift and transport which is good if you do not have a car. And in case of an emergency, most public transportation can easily accommodate them. They are easier to manage at the veterinarian clinics (especially if the facilities are limited and space constraint). Plus grooming small dogs just get easier for to groomers.
- A toy breed dog can get its daily exercise by moving about in an apartment or gentle walking on treadmill. True, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need to be taken out for a fresh breath of air once in awhile. Being cooped up all day is very bad for a dog’s mental health.
- With its petite size, obviously small dogs eat less. Hence maintaining them doesn’t burn too big a hole in your pockets. As to all dogs of various sizes, spare cash has to be in place for uncalled situations like injuries or illness.
Big Dogs
- Big dogs, especially very large ones like Great Danes may live only up to 10 years. Medium to big-sized dogs may live up to 15 years or longer, depending on individual health and living conditions.
- Some big dogs are more prone to certain disorders such as hip dysplasia (due to their weights) and heart failure.
- It is crude and unhealthy to keep big dogs in two bedrooms apartment even he gets to roam very corner of the house. Any place smaller than that is classified as cruelty to animal rights in many first-world countries.
- Bigger dogs require owners to have a bigger car if they are to be taken to the veterinarian clinics, dog grooming parlors, or camping activities. Of course, you can also engage pet taxi services, but for regular weekend outings to the beach may not be that feasible. It also requires much strength lifting up big dogs, and managing them can post some difficulties or inconveniences to the vets or groomers. But big dogs give you more to hug as compare to small dogs!
- A big dog must be taken out for exercises every day, at a minimum twice. Unless you’ve a large enclosed plot of land for him to walk about, maybe you can do away with one slow jog a day. This can be trying during poor weather or when you are too exhausted from work, at least you and your dog get some bonding time daily.
- Big dogs can wolf down surprising quantities of food. Even more so for those dogs who lead active and healthy lifestyle. So be prepared to have bottomless pockets. Considering this as a forewarn advice.
