Purebred Dogs versus Crossbreed Dogs
When you decided to bring a dog into your life, you may face with a choice between a purebred (also known as pedigree) dog and a crossbreed dog. I’ve listed the pros and cons of both breeds in order to help new dog owners narrowing down their decision.
Important note: Please do not be confused the crossbreed dogs with designer dogs. They’re totally in separate categories but not of “extreme contrast”.
Purebred Dogs
- Purebred dogs may inherit diseases and disorders common to their breed, especially if the breeders are unscrupulous.
- Pedigree dogs are bred for specific characteristics. While individual dogs differ, you usually know what you’re getting from a certain breed, and how best to interact with your dog.
- You’ll know if a particular breed needs extra exercise, a special diet, special medical attention, and how to look out for peculiar behavior common to that breed.
- You’ll know how big your purebred pup will get. You’ll also know if the dog has enough room to be kept in an apartment. Therefore when shopping for dog supplies, you’ll make better assessment of things needed for the new pup as he grows.
Crossbreed Dogs
- Dogs with mixed ancestry are more likely to escape the hereditary diseases often passed on within pure breeds.
- It is hard to judge what temperament a crossbreed puppy will develop. But if you know what the parents are like, you have a good idea. Whether they’re aggressive or gentle? Nervous or calm? Playful or reserved?
- Well-cared-for crossbreeds are often known to live longer, healthier lives than many purebreds. However, they’re always exceptional. I’ve known many purebred outlive crossbred given the fact both breeds are raised in the same environment. For crossbreed, specific care needs must be patiently explored.
- It is hard to predict what adult size a crossbreed pup will reach. If both parents are small, there’s a good chance it will also be small, but there’s no guarantee. As said, you’ve to look beyond the immediate generation. For 99.99% of the time, nobody can be certain the various and numerous genes being pooled in a stray crossbreed dog.
So what is my verdict?
For readers who have been reading my numerous posts and my bio, know that I’m a big time sucker for all dogs of different shape, size, color and age. But if I’m being gunned down to just have one choice, then I’ll have to pick purebred. Which breed? Which breeder? What age group? Male or Female? How many? And base on what condition and element made me picked that particular breed? Then you have to stay tune to Dog Breed Saga.
