Chihuahua
Some members in the Chihuahua breed weigh under a kilogram, making them the smallest dogs in the world. Both the long-haired and short-haired Chihuahua are exact identical in all except coat length.
Origin: Named after the Mexican state where they were first obtained, these dogs are the likely descendants of a very old breed, known as the Techichi, which was kept here by the Toltec Indians as far back as the 9th century AD.
Pottery dog figurines found in Mexico certainly show dogs of this type. One theory is that such small dogs were fattened up and used for food, another that they had some religious significance; yet another that similar dogs lived wild in the Mexican mountains. Whatever its origins, it still maintains several unique characteristics.
Chihuahua is only recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1904, the original Chihuahua were smooth-coated, but through crossing these with other dog breeds it was possible for breeders in America to produce long-coated forms.
Temperament: Chihuahua is a very loyal by nature, and live well in reasonably confined surroundings, although they do have quite a penetrating and persistent bark for their size. A good companion which loves attention, but is happier when not with other breeds.
Grooming: Brush with a soft brush and rub down with a velvet pad or chamois leather to make the coat gleam. Do check the tear stains around the eyes.
Feeding: Chihuahua appetites for food is predictably small, it can be quite particular about its diet.
Exercise: Don’t be fooled by thinking that Chihuahuas are just for carrying. You will be surprised how much they enjoy a good walk regularly.
