Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel PuppyA larger breed than its cousin, the King Charles, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is immensely popular because of its good temperament and attractive appearance.

Origin: Both Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and King Charles are traced back to common stock. The King Charles can trace its ancestry to Japan two thousand years ago and became popular at the Stuart court in 16th century England. It has often been related how King Charles II of England spent more time playing with his spaniels in council chambers than attending to affairs of state and how he would take his pets into the bedchamber.

In 1920s, a detailed “formula” for the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was produced, to direct the efforts of breeders. They selected for a larger dog with a longer muzzle and flat skull. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was a winner, and quickly gained popularity in Britain and to a lesser extent in America.

Temperament: Sporting, affectionate, fearless and level-headed. Ideal pet, good with children.

Grooming: Daily brushing with bristle brush. Eyes should be kept clear of tear streaks.

Exercise: Should not be kenneled out of doors, but the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel enjoys a good walk with its owner.
