Bichon Frise

Bichon Frise PictureA very lively small dog, Bichon Frise, and one that is much more sturdy and playful than many other toy breeds.

Origins: Bichon Frise is believed to have originated in Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa. Its ancestors were brought to Europe over 400 years ago, and became especially popular among members of the French aristocracy. For centuries, Bichon Frises were companion dogs in the European courts, where they enjoyed a pampered existence.

By the 1800s, however, the breed had lost favor. Thereafter Bichon Frise, like Poodle was draughted into circus troupes of accompanying organ grinders. The robust, cheerful nature of the modern Bichon is probably a legacy of its days as hard working entertainer.

Though its exact origins are unknown, it is probably descended from an early water spaniel, but some think that sailors brought it back to the Mediterranean from the Canary Islands in the 14th century.

A standard was first established in France in 1933, and the breed was exported to USA by a Monsieur Picault and his wife in 1956. The breed has found popularity as a pet in American, and the time seems ripe for it to become fashionable in Britain.

Temperament: A good natured companion, amusing, affectionate, and well-behaved with both children and other dogs, ultimate companion dog.

Exercise: Strenuous exercise isn’t needed. Can be trained to herd sheep.

Grooming: The “power puff” appearance of show dogs is the result of much washing, trimming, brushing and talcum powder. Without this intensive treatment, the dog has an agreeable curly coat, but it must be groomed regularly. Its white coat can become muddy on even a short walk. It’s advisable for puppies to have a less elaborate coat than older dogs. Teeth and gums need particular attention.
