Cough Mixture Remedy for Dogs
Dogs (especially older dogs) sometimes suffer mild irritations in the airways that trigger coughing when weather changes or a sudden change in climate. However too much coughing dries out mucous membranes, which irritates the breathing tubes and makes coughing worse. You don’t want to wait until your dog is coughing day and night to get some homemade cough mixture remedy.
Note: If your dog has chronic cough i.e. kennel cough, pneumonia, heart disease or trachea failure; this cough mixture remedy won’t help much at all. Best is to take your dog to the veterinarian.
This remedy recipe is great to ease that irritation when your dog has a cough, or just to keep his lungs healthy.
Ingredients:
- 5 small carrots, shredded
- ¼ cup parsley leaves
- ¼ potato, chopped
- 4 sprigs watercress
- ½ teaspoon of slippery elm powder
- 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil
- 2 teaspoon of bone meal
- ¼ cup distilled water
Method:
- Puree the carrots in food processor or juicer (don’t throw away the pulp).
- Add all other ingredients and blend until smooth.
- Feed this once a day.
Special note: Preferably use organic ingredients. If they aren’t available in your area, remember to wash them thoroughly and peel off the carrot skin before shredding.
After five days and the coughing didn’t improve, you will have to make a trip to the veterinary clinic. An alternative is to get a bottle of children cough mixture off the pharmacy counter; however I don’t recommend this as many don’t know the proper dosage to give to their dog.

Do you give the entire quantity once a day, Renee, or a portion of it?

That depends, Rick.
If this is fed as a side meal like tea time (excluding two main meals without reducing the amount), than this will amount to two or three servings for dogs under 7- 8 lbs. Having said, I don’t recommend left over when “juice” is concerned (very important). Try to finish it within the day, if there’s remainder, just throw it away.
If this is to be substituted for one of two main meals (better option, IMO), I think it should be ok for Spike.
Again, where recipe is concern, it’s very much individual cases. Alter the ingredient amount to suit your needs—like see and feel thing.
Hope this helps!
