The Easiest Way To Exercise Your Dog Is Walking

Fitness and Games for DogsWalking is the first thing comes to mind when we talk about exercising our dogs. Whether your dog is a urban or suburb dweller  , especially dogs that are kept indoors most of the time, a walk on a leash several times a day is a necessity for sanitary reasons as well as for exercise.

The Benefit of Walking your Dog Daily

Walking, as with any other physical exercises, is a powerful stress-reliever for all dogs. Dogs will become sluggish (mentally and physically) and overweight if they are confined at home for long periods without some forms of exercise or activity. Moreover, your dog is likely to develop some behavioral problems such as excessive barking or chewing, and may even have tendency to become aggressive and destructive dog if he continues leading a very sedentary lifestyle. (Sounds familiar? Humans’ mood swing, abusive behavior, depression, constipation etc.)

Giving your dog regular walks is not only important, but it also enhances his life enormously. A good long walk every day is essential for your dog, preferably two if time isn’t an issue. From your dog’s perspective, a walk is not just a walk par se! Well, a walk not only exercises your dog physically, it also provides a different environment that challenges his mind and stimulates his senses. However, the most significant benefit is that walking keeps your dog happy, very happy!

Walking is an excellent way for you to bond and spend quality time with your dog. In addition, walking your dog daily has many benefits for you. Some examples would be to :

  • stay fit and active
  • shed off extra pounds
  • tone and relax the muscles
  • de-stress and detach from hectic workload
  • appreciate nature
  • get heart pumping and regulate normal breathing rate

In essence, walking is an activity that can benefit both you and your dog whether it is for mental, physical, or emotional health. That’s the joy of being a dog owner and the price of being one, priceless!

Having said, this is not implying to all potential dog owners to go out and get a dog for the sake of personal agenda although I’ve met a few.

I live in a population dense area and watch most owners waltz their dog out for the same 1-2 block walk three times a day. Dogs and their humans are capable of, and benefit from, long walks every day. Your advice is right on the money!

    Hi Mike,

    Thanks for your comment.

Yes, I hear you! :) And I really hope to see more owners take time out to walk their dog (forget even it’s a chore, just enjoy the walk!)
