Why You Should Keep Your Watchdog Indoor

Bite Size Tips for DogsIronic, isn’t it?

Shouldn’t a watchdog be kept outside in order to deter unwanted visitors?

Not at all. Let me explain.

All homes, be it apartments or terrace houses, have more than one entry to the house. Entry from the roof, backdoor, garage, ventilation pipe, attic, basement, and any rooms with windows. With these many entries, do you think the intruders have to restore to the main door or any particular entry where your dog at? Even if you have many dogs, it is still not feasible to place them at each individual entry. As social animals, dogs don’t separate themselves (if given a choice) from the pack when they sleep.

Studies have shown that dogs bond much tighter when they are in “close contact” with their pack leaders during sleeping hours. Having your dog in close contact with you, does not mean that you have to share the same bed with him. You can place his bed near yours or any where near your bedroom which your dog has quick and easy access to you should any intruders come bulging in.

Practical Tip: If you are worried about intruders, place a large dog bowl in the yard or patio—a warning that a dog is around. If the intruder did not heed that warning, he sure will be taken by surprise when he comes into your home. Your dog’s barking will have him contemplating—to challenge that big dog or to flee.

Suppose that intruder decided to proceed with his plan, you would feel a lot better with your dog standing between you and the intruder than you would if he were out in the yard.

What good is a protection dog if he’s far away from you in the yard?
