Dog Coat Pattern: Spots

DalmatianSpotted coats may have arisen naturally in the wild through genetic mutations that affected coat markings. The spots could have helped animals blend in better with certain surroundings, making it easier for them to escape predators and stalk prey, thus promoting the survival of those genes.

Whatever the origins of spots in wild animals, these markings were almost certainly deliberately bred for in domestic ones.

In dogs, spots are immediately linked with Dalmatians. While the breed is a very old one (based on evidence of spotted dogs depicted in ancient Egyptian art), their human guardians probably chose to breed individuals that would best pass on their distinctive markings to their offspring.

Not all spotted animals are born with spots. Some Dalmatians are born plain-coated and develop their markings later. In contrast, some species of deer may be born with spots but lose them as they mature.
