Crunchy Peanut Chews

Dog TreatsAfter writing yesterday post, I realized I too have a secret food treat recipe for dogs in need of killing boredom. As a matter of fact, the crunchy texture of the peanuts acts as a natural dental treatment, while the fat contained in the nuts helps make your pup’s coat nice and shiny.

Servings: Depending the size of your cut.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (250 ml) unsalted peanuts
  • 1 cup (250 ml) white sugar
  • 1 cup (250 ml) molasses
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) water
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) baking soda

Methods:

  1. Cook the sugar, molasses, and water over medium-high heat in a large skillet.
  2. Continue to heat until the mixture “strings” off the spoon in hair-width strands.
  3. Add peanuts.
  4. Remove from heat after two minutes and add baking soda.
  5. Pour mixture onto foil and cool.
  6. Once hard, break into small, manageable pieces.

Special note: Do not give this treat daily especially not to diabetic dogs at all. If you don’t think your dog have sweet tooth, you may want to reduce the white sugar and molasses to 3/4 cup instead of 1 cup. As you may know there is no difference in calories if you use brown sugar. They are both equally “sinful”, brown sugar has as much calories as white sugar, the only difference is that brown sugar tastes sweet in a natural sense.
