Dog Breeders Secrets - How to keep your Yorkshire Terrier coat in show quality?

Dog Grooming TipsWithout any doubt, all successful dog breeders and exhibitors of the Yorkshire Terrier have their little secrets and their peculiar methods of inducing the growth of hair and keeping in an immaculate condition.

These die-hard breeders regulate Yorkshire Terrier diet with extreme particularity. First is keeping the dog lean rather than fat, giving the priced dogs nothing that they would not dare eat it themselves.

Yorkie’s diet:

  • Bread, mixed with green vegetables, a little meat and gravy
  • Fresh fish, varied with milk puddings and Spratt’s “Toy Pet” biscuits, should be the staple food.

As with all dog, bone made of any materials/ingredient is never to be given, as the act of chewing them will risk spoiling Yorkies’ beard and moustache.

For the same reason it is best if possible to serve the food from your fingers. But many owners use a sort of mask or hood of elastic material which they tie over the dog’s head at mealtimes to hold back the long face fall and whiskers that would otherwise be smeared and sullied.

Similarly as a protection for the coat, when there is any skin irritation and an inclination to scratch, linen or cotton stockings are worn upon the hind feet. Hence, their silky coat will not be “broken”.

Many exhibitors will pretend that they do not use any dressing, or very little of it in, and only on rare occasional for the jackets of their Yorkshire Terriers. Don’t let them fool you; it is quite certain that continuous use of grease of some sort is not only advisable but even necessary.

There you have it, the secrets known to top show dog breeders of keeping their priced Yorkshire Terrier coat in flawless condition.

    Hi Brad,

If you are talking about wrapping the coat up on long coated dogs, I use perm papers to do so. You can find them in any hair and beauty shops. If possible use dental surgical latex bands instead of regular rubber bands. I wrote an article on how to tie a topknot here.

In addition, here’s an illustration on how to do it.

    Hope this helps!
