Detox Program for Dogs: Fruit Salad

Detox Program for DogsI’m a firm believer in detoxification, and I don’t think our dogs should be excluded from it. My dogs go through detox program twice yearly. All I can say is, they have such vibrant energy beyond their age. One good example, Snowball is going to be 16 years old this Oct, and that burger has no problem wrestling with Troy, his son (who happens to be much tougher than him), without penting half his breath away. What’s more, Snowball still shows great interest in cooing the opposite sex.

There are some vets will totally disagree with me as how dog body makeups differ from humans and shouldn’t go through this “awful” process. Yes, if it’s done wrongly, certainly it’s an “awful” feeling for both you and your dog. However, there are some experts who are advocates of this. I highly recommend Fit for Life ll for anyone who are serious about healthy lifestyle. This book is written for humans, but there is a very small portion of it on dog recipes. Once you understand the theory behind it, you can easily concoct your own detox recipes for dogs.

Fruit Salad Servings: 4 to 6

Ingredients:

  • Assorted seasonal fruits—apples, apricots, bananas, blueberries, cherries, seedless grapes, melon, oranges, peaches, pears, pineapple, plum, raspberries, strawberries.
  • ¼ cup apple jelly
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint leaves or 1 teaspoon dried mint leaves. (optional)

Methods:

  1. Wash all fruits thoroughly and cut them into doggie bite-size. Put them into a large salad bowl
  2. Cook the apply jelly over a low heat for 5 minutes or it melts and smooth.
  3. Let it cool off a little while before adding into the salad bowl with the cut fruits.
  4. Add the mint.

Special note:

If you’ve access to some topical fruits, by all means add or substitute them to your dog’s liking. For example, kiwi fruit, longan, lychee (Rovy’s favourite) and papaya. Remember to remove all the seeds, peel and rinds from the fruits you are using. And if you’re using banana, melon, papaya; do check for remains struck behind their premolar teeth.
