Canine Turkey Lasagna
If you want to cook something rich for your dog and yet not too sinful to his health, turkey lasagna is your best bet. Moreover, this is an excellent dish for your dog and yourself especially when you’ve hectic schedule the next few days.
I’m not sure if this ever happened to you but when I’m really, really busy I forget to eat. Thankfully, I always have my 2000ml water bottle with me all time. Slimming secret? Hint! Hint!
However, my dogs can’t go on water diet like I do, at least not on their non fasting days! So whenever I foresee a crazy schedule, I cook turkey lasagna! Serve only the needed portion for that day and keep the rest in the refrigerator. This recipe can last about 2 to 3 days for my four Maltese and I’m included.
Ingredients:
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 lb ground turkey breast
- 16 oz. can tomato sauce
- ½ tsp oregano (optional)
- ½ tsp basil (optional)
- 6 lasagna noodles unbroken
- 1 tbsp of olive oil, organic
- ¾ to 1 cup ricotta cheese
- ½ to ¾ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
- ¾ cup mozzarella cheese
Method (for the sauce):
- Heat the olive oil over a medium heat.
- Sauté the onion and garlic together until transparent.
- Add ground turkey and cook well.
- Add the tomato sauce and the oregano, basil if desired.
- Cover the pan and let it simmer for 5 minutes on low heat.
Lasagna Noodles: Cook the lasagna noodles according to package directions. Drain in colander and rinse in cool water to prevent them from sticking together. Note: noodles may be cooked in advance.
Method (For the Baking):
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Spread one third of the sauce on a baking pan of 11 x 7 x 1 inches evenly.
- Then top it a lay of 3 lasagna noodles, slightly overlapping.
- Mix ricotta and Parmesan cheese and spread it over the lasagna noodles.
- Again, spread another one third of the sauce over it.
- Top it with remaining 3 noodles and the remaining sauce.
- Sprinkle mozzarella cheese to add the final touch.
- Cover with foil and bake for 35 to 45 minutes
- Let cool for 15 minutes before cutting and serve.
Bon appétit

In reading the ingredients for homemade dog food, the recipe for “canine turkey lasagna” calls for an onion. I heard and read that onions are toxic to dogs. Please advise.

Hi Anna,
Yes, onions are toxic to dogs. That’s only when they are consumed whole, raw, and in large amount.
Generally, most owners don’t use much onions in dog food recipes neither do dogs eat them often. I occasionally use them in preparing my dog’s meal mainly to enhance the taste and fragrance. However, you are welcome to customize the recipe whichever you feel comfortable.
Hope that helps!
