How to Work with your Dog Breed Instinct?

Dog Behavior Training TipsSo I see you finally got your ideal dog home after careful research. If he is behaving well to your expectation, then I’m very happy for you. Chances are you haven’t notice some peculiar behavior yet. Sorry to spoil your fun. Honestly, there is no dog in the world born with perfect behavior custom made to your expectation without some minor training involved.

Well, not all dog behavioral trainings have to be difficult to accomplish, many are downright easy to implement and yet very effective. The only question is whether you want to pursue them.

Dealing with Breed Instinct

Your first impulse might be to train your dog against the things you finding them so annoying. But do you really want to yell at your Basset Hound when he hounds at the noise outside? What if some one is breaking into your home while you were sleeping? You will be pretty irritated if your dog didn’t warn you. Instead try to work with the instinct.

Your retriever won’t kidnap the remote if it is spread in apple or Tabasco sauce. You are not telling him that it is bad to take the remote; he is making the choice on his own because it tastes snappy.

The barking can be a little more different but the key is to approach it an activity like herding, during the day light hours while you are home.

Easy Steps to Stop your dog from Barking

  • Fill a soda can with penny or marble then tape off the opening. Keep it ready in seconds notice.
  • Another good option is cooking pan.
  • When your dog start howling or barking, shake the can vigorously and/or band the pan on the counter or another pan or drop it on the floor.

You scare the heck out of your dog barking about. When he stops, tell him “good, quiet”.

Keep this up, and your dog will horn his instinct, bark or howl only at the things that warden it, not just because the instinct is there telling him to howl.

Don’t negate your dog breed instinct and don’t work against it. It is what we’d encourage them to do over centuries and it is a powerful influence. Work with that instinct to horn it and not only will you get the benefit of its breeding; those impulses will work to your benefits as well as your dog.
